Offering beautiful flowers of different colours and pleasant fragrances to God is a part of everyday routine in prayers at every home and temple. Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji explains during the ‘Laksha Pushpa:rchana’ event on what the offering indicates.

A fragrant flower symbolises ‘maturity’. External beauty of the flower w.r.t colour and shape of the petals is only appreciated when it gives a pleasant fragrance. The ‘look and feel’ can drag you towards a pretty flower, but you will choose to stay away from it as soon as you experience an unpleasant odour. But, if the pretty flower has a pleasant fragrance, we accept it. The flower gives a sense of sweet feeling and you will want to share it with others.

Similarly, we as individuals are more cherished when our behaviour and actions reflect a sense of maturity and wisdom. People around us and the surroundings are benefited with such an individual. By offering pretty fragrant flowers, we pray to God for giving us that kind of beauty that is inside and outside.

Also, anything that we offer to God with LOVE is precious to him. He does not prefer one over another. However, elders recommend qualified offerings because these offerings leave us with pleasant feeling over others. The recommended offerings motivate us to become ‘pleasant and mature’ so that we can serve the world as service to HIM. For ex: A fragrant beautiful flower or honey or milk or a fruit are all offerings that are good for our health to help us serve actively; and good for our thought to help serve rightly.
